Phil Porter

Baritone

The son of a Baptist minister, Phil has always had music around him. The grandson of a Salvation Army trumpet player on his mother’s side of the family and a church organist on his dad`s side, he was exposed to church and gospel music from his earliest days. In grade seven he surprised his parents by picking out tunes on a neighbour’s piano during a visit, so they purchased a piano so he could take lessons. He took lessons for two years, and stopped by mutual agreement of he and his teacher, who didn’t think he was applying himself to his lessons. Six months later he became the pianist in the church she attended and he hasn’t stopped playing since. Phil is a proud graduate of West Kings, where he sang in the choir, played in the band, and was the lead in his high school musicals. He’s always found time for music in his life, as the pianist for his church and the former director and accompanist of the Dartmouth Men’s Choir. Phil is a singer songwriter, and has released two CDs of his own music. He considers it a privilege to sing in Nova Voce, and hopes, someday, to be the old guy in the choir.

Tenor 1

Tim joined Nova Voce in 2009 and throughly enjoys the experience as it allows his heart to soar.  He has been singing since he was very young.  He first heard men’s choral music as a teenager when his dad was part of the Men’s Choir in Lockeport under the direction of NV’s former conductor Terry Hurrell.  As an adult he continues to enjoy singing, both with Nova Voce and in occasional musical theatre performances such as Gilbert and Sullivan.

Don is a charter member of Nova Voce and continues to enjoy immensely the experience of singing great music with this fine choir. He treasures the opportunity of singing the excellent repertoire under gifted directors with such a fine group of committed singers. The experience has been enriched by travels which have seen Nova Voce act as musical ambassadors across Nova Scotia, in other provinces, as well as internationally. Don is a retired school music teacher (as is his spouse, Vivian), having taught his entire career in the Dartmouth schools. He and Vivian have two daughters and five grandchildren, all of whom are musically inclined and involved. Bob McCalla

Baritone

One of the original members of Nova Voce, Bob is recently retired from Saint Mary’s University. He also sings in Seton Cantata Choir and the Jubilate Singers in Halifax, and for five years sang in the Royal Nova Scotia International Tattoo choir. His involvement with organized singing began in high school where Mr. Tufford must have thought he could hold a tune and picked him to do a solo in the high school variety show. While an undergraduate at the University of Western Ontario he sang in the University Choir. Music has always been important to Bob; to this day he continues to take piano lessons. He says being a member of Nova Voce is more than singing though:  it’s also about sharing laughs and accomplishments and sometimes sorrows with a bunch of great guys who all love to sing.
