A Proud History

With the founding of Nova Voce in 2004, a new and distinctive voice was added to Nova Scotia's choral landscape. In January of that year, Terry Hurrell and Giuseppe Renzi, Nova Voce's principal and assistant artistic directors, auditioned singers from around the province. Their goal was the performance at the highest level of the finest music for men's voices. In Wolfville that June, the choir gave the first of its inaugural series of six concerts across the province. Reviewing a concert at Halifax's Neptune Theatre less than a year later, Stephen Pedersen wrote: "they astonished me with their opening chord, a sound as soft as velvet and as deep as midnight..."

In 2005, the choir represented Nova Scotia at Canada Day celebrations in Ottawa, performing at the National Arts Centre, the Rotunda of the Parliament buildings, and in Christ Church Cathedral. More recently, Nova Voce successfully auditioned for Festival 500 in St. John's, Newfoundland. This highly-regarded international choral festival takes place at two-year intervals. The 2007 edition featured 31 of the finest choirs from around the world, and marked a new stage in Nova Voce's development.

Nova Voce's sound and repertoire have grown and matured as it continues to fulfill its mandate as a provincial choir, with spring and fall tours to Nova Scotian communities including Wolfville, Berwick, Lower Sackville, Amherst, New Glasgow, Liverpool, Shelburne, Lunenburg, West Chezzetcook, Musquodoboit Harbour, Middleton, Bedford, Halifax, and Dartmouth. It has also delighted audiences in joint performances with such ensembles as the Symphony Nova Scotia and the SNS Chorus, the Aeolian Singers, the Stadacona Band, the Annapolis Valley Honour Choir, the Halifax Boys' Honour Choir, Soundtrax, Nova Sinfonia, and the Vancouver Welsh Men's Choir.

This season, Nova Voce looks forward to concerts in Shelburne, Antigonish, Halifax, West Chezzetcook, Oxford, and Chester, and to appearing in Sackville NB at Podium 2008 (the annual meeting of Canadian choral conductors). The choir will also be recording its first CD.
